A cocaine spoon or coke spoon is a type of spoon used for the nasal insufflation of cocaine.[1] When used for snuff, it is known as a snuff spoon.

History

Snuff spoons appeared somewhere between 1702 and 1704. The spoons were used on the Scottish border beginning in the 1750s and described as being made of bone and small enough to fit inside a snuff-box, thereby allowing users to form a complete and tiny package that they could carry in their pockets.[2]

The McDonald's coffee stirring spoon became popular with drug users and dealers as a makeshift cocaine spoon, leading to its discontinuation in 1979, as part of the war on drugs.[3]

In popular culture

  • Youngblood Priest, the protagonist of the 1972 film Super Fly, is depicted as wearing a coke spoon necklace.
